From September 2007 there have been new qualification requirements for those taking up posts for the first time in the lifelong learning sector. The Preparing to Teach in Life Long Learning Sector Award (PTLLS) is a first step on a journey to qualified teacher status and it is essential that is acheived within the first year of starting to teach in the sector. It is also a useful preparation and introduction for those considering teaching in the sector.

Achievement of this award confers a threshold licence to teach and is starting point for continuous professional development (CPD). It also allows those who achieve the award to become a affiliate members of the Institute for Learning (IfL).

Course Content

The PTLLS Award is based around six domains identified in the professional standards for teachers, tutors and trainers in the lifelong learning sector. The six domains have statements of knowledge and understanding and associated professional practice.

The six domains are:

  • Professional values and practice
  • Learning and teaching
  • Specialist learning and teaching
  • Planning for learning
  • Assessment for learning
  • Access and progression
