Fire annually kills 700 people in the UK and costs approximately 1.5 Million in insurance claims from industries.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 came into effect in October 2006 and replaces over 70 parts of the fire safety law. The order applies to all non-domestic premises in England and Wales, including the common parts of block of flats or houses.
The law applies to you if you are:
- Responsible for a business premises
- An employer or self-employed with business premises
- Responsible for a part dwelling used as a business premises
- A charity or voluntary organisation
- A contractor with a degree of control over the premises.
Legislation implements a risk based approach to fire safety in community, industrial and business premises. It requires the responsible person (usually the employer, owner or occupier) to carry out a fire safety risk assessment and implement appropriate fire precautionary and protection measures, and maintain a fire management plan.
